Well, I’ve checked out the websites and all I can say is, who said there isn’t enough to do in this part of the South Coast, (apart from going to the beach, climbing Pigeon House Mountain, Durras Mountain, picnicking at Shallow Crossing, eating and drinking at our many fabulous restaurants and wine bars…) the list goes on and on.
First up, there’s the truly wonderful Blessing of the Fleet Festival on this Easter in Ulladulla, on the Princes highway and around the harbour.
The Festival Parade at 11 am Easter Sunday with the princesses in all their gorgeousness accompanied by their swains probably wishing they were anywhere else but standing on those floats. Never mind, the kids will love it- who doesn’t love the sight of beautiful young people celebrating their vitality and youth?
That’s followed by the actual Blessing of the Fleet, an Italian custom brought to Ulladulla by the two major Italian families who founded the fishing industry in this area. During the ceremony the statue of St Peter is carried down to the harbour and the local priest sprinkles holy water on the boats to help protect fishermen and their crews.
Then it’s massed pipe bands, Celtic dancers on the highway followed by Circus 35 degrees south, (not to be missed, have a look at their website) Plus, if you want to be really disgusting, join in the spaghetti eating contest where you can have a tomato sauce bath, as well as various beach games such as the Greasy Pole and a tug o war contest.
Access the Blessing of the Fleet website for the program, and choose your days and activities. The kids will love you for it. Don’t forget the final day’s fireworks, for many, that’s the best part.
Still to come, after Easter, is the Stand Up Paddle Board Day to be held at beautiful Sussex Inlet April 17-19. This is a truly exciting event, the results of the three days will determine who will be in the NRMA SUP Team for the 2015 Australian SUP Titles.
I can’t go without mentioning that, if you are into music festivals you will be mad with yourself if you don’t get a ticket for the Kidgeeridge Music Festival to be held this year at the Milton Showground on May 1– that’s as long as they are not already sold out.
This boutique South Coast Festival has grown in strength every year until it is so popular the originators, the Whites of Conjola, can no longer hold it on their property. More on the Festival and its delights later (The Audreys, Mark Seymour…interested?) but camping at the Showground is already sold out so you need to move fast if you want a ticket.
However, we can accommodate you At Bawley Bush Retreat – CLICK HERE to find out more information. We are only 25 minutes south of Milton and a delightful place to stay and refresh yourselves after an exciting and exhausting day festivaling on the south coast.
See you in the surf!!
